Why We Attend NDASA’s Annual Conference: Connections, Technology, Trends
There’s a saying: “If you’re not there, then you’re not there.” It may sound simple, but it holds true, especially in today’s evolving workplace.
Over the course of my career, I’ve seen firsthand how dramatically the definition of “workplace” has changed. I began as a high school history teacher in Las Vegas, teaching in a traditional brick-and-mortar classroom with students showing up each day. As my personal life evolved, I transitioned to online teaching, working from a home office and balancing both worlds.
Similar shifts have taken place in the drug screening industry, driven in part by the COVID-19 pandemic and changing workforce preferences. However, through all of these changes, one thing has remained constant: nothing replaces face-to-face interaction when it comes to building relationships, understanding products, and staying on top of industry trends.
Building Connections
When I began considering a transition out of education, I reached out to Bill Current, who was expanding areas of his business where my background in marketing and education could add value. It turned out to be a natural fit.
In fact, my connection to the industry goes back even further. As a high school senior, I participated in an “Executive Internship” program that allowed students to gain real-world experience. While some of my peers found easy ways to fulfill the requirement, Bill challenged me to put in the time and truly learn the business. That experience introduced me to workplace policies, regulatory frameworks, and the vital role of industry consultants.
Years later, when I returned to the industry, I found myself once again building relationships, which included participating in client calls, managing communication services, and refining messaging and strategy. But it wasn’t until I began attending trade shows with Current Consulting Group (CCG) that my professional growth accelerated. Engaging with peers, meeting exhibitor booth neighbors, and having real face-to-face conversations opened the door to deeper insights and stronger connections.
Understanding Industry Products
Early on, I had the opportunity to edit the book Why Drug Testing, which remains a valuable resource even today. But that experience was only the beginning; I quickly realized that fully understanding this industry requires immersion.
When Current Consulting Group launched the state drug testing law database, now known as CurrentCompliance.org, I saw firsthand how access to clear, organized legal requirements could empower employers to make informed decisions. Through live demonstrations, I was able to cut through confusion and help both employers and service providers understand its practical value in their day-to-day operations.
Attending trade shows like NDASA’s annual conference brought that learning to life. I connected with companies specializing in rapid oral fluid testing, drug testing software, and background screening solutions. Seeing these products demonstrated in person made all the difference; it highlighted not only their value, but also the innovation that has been driving safer, smarter, and more efficient workplaces.
Tracking Industry Trends
At CCG, we make it a priority to stay informed about emerging trends, not just in legislation, but also in best practices and technology. While not every new idea gains traction, innovation continues to push the industry forward.
NDASA’s annual conference is one of the best places to see that evolution in action. Beyond the exhibit hall, attendees can participate in breakout sessions and main stage presentations led by industry experts. These sessions provide valuable information regarding changing laws, new technologies, and practical strategies that employee screening professionals can use to help their customers get the most out of their services.
Conclusion
We can learn a great deal from books, virtual meetings, and email exchanges, but nothing compares to the impact of in-person interaction. Building trust, strengthening relationships, and truly understanding the people behind the business all happen more naturally face to face.
So, if you’re not planning to attend NDASA’s Annual Conference in Anaheim, CA, from April 27–29, you’re not only missing the event physically, but your company’s representation, ideas, and contributions to the industry won’t be there either.
At CCG, we’re available to connect, whether by phone, email, virtual meetings, and, when possible, in person. And we’re especially looking forward to being in Anaheim for NDASA.
Stop by Booth 207 to say hello to Vince Bonomo and me. Additionally, CCG will host presentations on Tuesday and Wednesday, including a session highlighting the results of the 2026 Drug Testing Industry Survey. We hope to see you there!
